About the Department
Since 1977 the Department of Architecture has been providing programs in architectural technology and construction. Today it offers two (2) undergraduate programmes: An Associate of Science (Architectural and Building Technology) and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture. Housed in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology allows the program to integrate knowledge and skills from other engineering disciplines. Elective courses from other faculties help to create a transdisciplinary experience for the future built environment practitioners’ knowledge. An internship component to the BSc program also prepares students for industry upon graduation. Students upon graduating can work as Architectural Technicians, Graduate Architects or delve into specialized fields like landscape design or architectural heritage preservation.
Core focus of the department comprises training on key areas including sustainability in architectural design and construction, architectural heritage preservation, building information modelling and Computer Aided-Drafting (CAD), building services, construction measurement and costing (aka quantity surveying), construction and project management, and urban design and planning.
Professional ethics is also taught and students are expected to demonstrate such via individual practice and also teams for design studio projects. The final academic component of the program requires students to deliver an architectural dissertation on a topic of choice with the supervision by both academic and professional practitioners.
The department welcomes students who are disciplined, enthusiastic, curious, and committed to contributing to the UN sustainable development goals and to Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy 2030.
Architecture students will have the opportunity to participate in the Annual International Lekol Competition D’ Architecture in French Guiana. Since 2023, the department has been a participant and has taken home the prizes for Best Design and Best Sustainable Construction Design.
